DEI initiatives create more diversity and inclusion into the work place. They are usually housed within a separate team, the education is separate, the leader is separate, the objectives are separate and when the programs don’t yield the expected results, the DEI initiatives disappear. Ironic, right? The very program that is supposed to bring unity is held separately.
After leading Learning & Development, Leadership Development Programs and DEI, I realized early on that if we keep them separate, we won’t achieve the overall goal of inclusion. How can we have inclusion when the optics and systems are separate? So…
We created a program that is all inclusive! We believe that our Leaders are the heart of the success of DEI and inclusion. If we develop our leaders to be inclusive in everything they do from hiring to inspiring, we can create a workplace that fosters and embraces belonging and authenticity. One leader at a time, one team at a time and company at a time! Belonging is contagious, when other leaders see how employees feel, how they produce and how they engage – they will want that too!
The program takes the core responsibilities of a leader (hiring, managing, developing & inspiring) and elevates it to the next level – taking an inclusive spin to all the core competencies. For example, in hiring; there is a hiring process to follow, but there are ways to infuse inclusion – rewriting the job descriptions, the interview process, the questions during interviewing, having panel interviews, uncovering biases, culture add – this is just the hiring step! Imagine all of the other responsibilities a leader has – imagine all of the opportunities a leader has to create inclusion!
